It has been some time since the last post - random photos

Yes, it has been some time I last posted. And the last few posts are expressions - with words and more words. It is about time I post some pictures :

Raindrop or teardrop
Taken at Bus stop opposite Jurong East Library

It is a long winding road

Amidst of hustle and bustle life of pubbing, and busying office people rushing among so many banks ,and Ka-ching ( sound of cash register --- money, money ) at boat quay, here is a scene behind all the touristy and $$$ glam. Old houses, big container dustbin, bicycles ...

What is the sound of one hand clapping?

The above title is a Japanese Koan. A Koan is a riddle which may not have one answers. It may not have any answer. This open added style provokes thinking and meditation. My guess is that the answers depends on individual life experiences ( and thus differs from one person to another). In fact, at different points of time in life, the answers ,and maybe the subject for pondering, may change.

Now that I have at home healing, I shall offer some of my own reflection.

The doctor diagnosed me having an autoimmune disease - meaning that my immune system is attacking itself. They could initially be a virus, I'm not sure. But my immune system keeps on attacking my own body parts perceiving that there is virus or some sort, where there actually isn't any! Is my immune system hearing sound of one hand clapping.

Searches for the cause of this problem through in the internet results in ... nothing. There is no known direct cause to my problem. But there a big clue : Stress! many sites suggested that stress could be a trigger. This rings a bell because my colleague just the other day when my fever is starting suggests that I could be having some unconscious stress.

Upon reflection I could be...just the other day I hear one of my other colleague saying that " If I ever get a B for my exams, I will cry" This come as a shock to me actually. I told her that I would be satisfied with any of my subjects getting a B - wouldn't I?

Have I been subconsciously aiming too high? becoming a perfectionist? I have already mentioned that I pity my own students because I can see that they are in tremendous pressure to perform to the best. That is why I usually takes a softer approach compare to the days I taught in secondary school. Most of them are already very motivated, maybe too motivated to a point of breaking down. Perhaps it is me that subconsciously bring myself to a point of stress level, that I am hearing the sound of one hand clapping. And thus the breakdown of my immune system.

Being PERFECT vs Being SPECIAL

I must admit that in my days teaching in secondary school, life is more hectic; but it may not be as stressful. A lesson needs not be perfect. When we say perfect, we usually have to be perfect by a benchmark or standard set by other people or the society! On the one hand, my totally agree that in the society today, we are living in a world of benchmarking; if we are not good enough, compared to others, we don't even get the course of study we want in the university. Even after getting a degree, the first class honours are the ones who get the job interview first... but is this what we want. In my opinion, being perfect just makes us a better robot ( If you win a rat race, that just makes you a better rat!) How about being special? Being special comes from a quality from within! When you doing something, and you feel satisfied about it truly, because your heart tells you so. This truly special quality appeals people in a very different way than being perfect.

A pianist who plays in perfect pitch, perfect tempo, in perfect intonation, well is just as good as a ... computer - a machine. A truly good pianist plays from the heart; the emotions felt by the audience from a piece of music from heart has a certain quality words are difficult to describe. It just moves you to tears.

In retrospect, when I teach in secondary school, my lessons are far from perfect from the standard. This is especially true with my Character Education CE lessons for co-form class. It is an secondary 3 normal academic class. I have asked permission to change the lessons structure and content of the CE lessons from the HOD, and I am glad to be granted the permission - and importantly the trust that I can alter the lessons better suited for the students. I turned the syllabus upside down, filtering those items I think that useful to them, injecting lots of extra stuff. I rent videos to for them to watch, ask them to write reflection after that ... In my heart , I sincerly hope that although the lessons are far from perfect, I hope that the lessons are special, for it is for them.

I trully understand what one of my ex-principal I work under says : the five fingers are of different length, they should be. What is important is to develop each of them to their fullest potential.

Similarly my scouting syllabus are a bit off compared to the scouting standards. I had the understanding and trust of the HODs and P to change some of the activities to cater to the small, neighbourhood scout troop. Together with the volunteer leaders - I have alot of help from them because they can relate to young kids better and I am always learning from them - we change and alter a number of the scouting activities to suit the needs of the students. In fact I have authorise a number of 'illegal' or I should say unothorox games. I have a confession to make, I actually said, " Rules can be bend, but it must be bent for the good of the students!"

I think this succintly summarise my stand of being perfect and being special. On the one hand, to a huge extend I must agree, we must follow the social norms and attain a certain benchmark set against others ( especially in exams) . On the other hand, the quality of being special comes from the heart, comes from the true understand of your students / customer / client ...

I am still struggling to attain this balance.

Ultimate self poisoning?

A number of good hearted friends , colleagues and even students, who know that I am a heavy coffee drinker, have advised me to cut down or quit coffee altogether. At the moment, this seems rather more different than getting a cat to swim.

Many websites have commented that taking paracetamol are self poisoning as well.

To put them together, to 500 mg paracetamol and 65 mg caffeine. So technically, if I take coffee and panadol together, I will have the same effect. And a brewed coffee easily hits 65 mg of caffeine.

This is exactly, I've done. Before I gave it a try, I was apprehensive; is it going to affect my blood pressure, my heart beat ... Well, now I actually feel good. I'm perspiring, a body is naturally ( not that naturally actually) clearing away the heat.

My exams is in 3 days time, another one 2 days later. Is it going to have long term effects? Let's wait after my exams. Finally manage to have to energy to get to revise my studies.

A Visit to the Polyclinic

I seldom write in my blog; I usually just post pictures with a little bit of caption here and there. But today's experience is really something - worth writing about and reflect upon.

There are other minor incidences which I'm going to ignore, but let me just zoom in the the shocking part: When the doctor was taking my temperature using the ear thermometer on my right ear, the thermometer reads 36.6. I insisted that I had a fever - sometimes listening to the body is the best gauge. I felt really bad. The temperature I took this morning reads 38.1.

The doctor took the temperature again on my left ear - and it was 37.4. And she just continues to say that , oh, slight fever. A difference of 0.8 deg celsius is a huge difference! and doesn't it occur to the doctor that the there could be something WRONG with the measurements - 2 measurements taken seconds apart has such a huge difference and no further actions were taken. With a temperature gradient of 0.8 deg between my head! I'm very concern. There is either something wrong with me, the ear thermometer, or the doctor.

When you google 'ear thermometer inaccurate' there are lists of sites. One first one out is :
http://www.mdsr.ecri.org/summary/detail.aspx?doc_id=8302

According to this website the ear thermometer is generally accurate, but is it the temperature of the ear that varies quite a bit. This bring me to my 2nd point : the air con was so cold I was shivering outside while waiting for the doctor. The temperature of my ear could be affect by the air con better suited for penguin.

Anyway, when I went back home ( I actually live a small road across the polyclinic) after some time. ' after some time' needless to say is due to the waiting time to get medicine. I check my temperature again and it was 37.7. When I took the paracetamol , what else can it be? the pharmacist assistant looked at the medicine... it was written 1 tablet 3 times a day. She actually said 1 or 2 tablet. That is just so clear.

Being the obedient me, I took 1 tablet. But the fever did not subside after on hour. So I took the liberty to take two instead - better. But the temperature rises when the drug wears out.

Another thing, I used a really old card. The assistant ask me to inform the doctor to transfer my drug allergy to my new card. The doctor says that is not the problem, but the drug allergy has been captured by computer system. When I went to get the medicine, the pharmacist assistant asked me for any drug allergy?!?! Is she confirming or just blur?!?!

When I'm writing this, the temperature is not getting any better. Could it be due to some subconscious stress which I colleague was suggesting?!?! maybe.

I'm hoping very hard not to see a doctor again, and of course, this is inevitable. But you can be sure that polyclinic would not be my first choice if I can help it. The word national health care or public health care has earned itself a bad name in many countries. On one hand, I appreciate the upgraded systems and such. I was initially quite impress with the on-line registration, computerised workflow of the medication and such. But I must add that the system is as good as the people who runs it. Without dedicated and well trained people, systems are just digital 1s and 0s, and flow charts and targets ... The people in the registration ( regardless of the fancy, nice sounding name) was actually talking about having allocated the patients to a room that has not existed! Is she new?

Serimbun Camp

Amongst my city dwelling life, I cherish every opportunity to be in touch with nature. Steal some time to pop by the combined scouts and guides camp in Serimbun. Hmm ... if you have not been to serimbun camp, don't think you can consider yourself a scout in Singapore. Of the so many campsites in Singapore which I've been too, I must say that Serimbun campsite is the one you can get in touch with nature the most.

Swamp walk anyone? wallow in it?!?! Not actually , the water level was so high, if feels like walking in a big 'long kang' (aka drain)

Hmm.. now that the fire has started... what should we cooked? Some using 'eye power' to start the fire.

Met some visiting Japanese scouts camping there as well. Admire their meticulous planning and structured style of camping. Look at the way they stacked their pegs!!! ... then again, can't we just get messy a bit for once .
Slide into the 'pool', Note that there is not drainage. Well, then again, what you don't know can't hurt you. Maybe, maybe not:

Preparing for closing ceremony.

LASER

Readers may be bored by my "LASER" pics, so I'm not going to be short this time round. This picture is interesting because you can see the mechanism inside:

The diffraction pattern ... yawn yawn ... ok, just like to note that the red dots are farther apart then the green. This is due to the longer wavelength of red light. Trivial? well if not for the difference in wavelength of different colours, there won't be a rainbow.
