Discrete Spectral Lines

Night lesson today - Introduction to Quantum Mechanics . A wonderful revision and as usually new insights are realized.

These are come discrete spectral lines observed from some gas emission. By observing these emission spectral we can actually identify the kind of gas in the tube.

As usually I was busying taking photos and fail to take down notes of the gas emission.

The spectral below is Neon. ( If I paid attention enough)

Can't remember what's this. Didn't take down notes - was busying trying to take photos of other emission, didn't manage d to get any good pics.

Wienner Kaffeehaus

Wienner Kaffeehaus, a wonderful place for coffee lovers. Been there today with some of my ex-colleagues. Have a wonderful time chit chatting and enjoying coffee. The place actually roast their coffee, I suppose, because as you can see from the picture below, the bag of coffee on the right is still green! This I think is the coffee grinder or something.
Really amazing place and an eye opener for someone like me who takes coffee drinking seriously and 'part-and-parcel'ly.

Those who want to kayak but doesn't have certification

Wonderful to have people organising kayaking trip. The actual plan is to go to Chek Jawa, but due to unforeseen bad weather... we end up having lunch at Ubin Jetty again ha ha.

For those wants to try kayaking and doesn't have certification, where is this place at Pasir Ris Park call WaterCross. They have very new kayaking rental.

They have jet ski too!

This is a scene of Fisherman Village, not in good business.

Teacher's Day II

There is a bit of difference celebrating teacher's day in ACJC and Unity. While ACJC has all those glam glam stuff with world-class choir, band ... ( ACtually superb) , I feel a wonderful touch of simple sincerity back at Unity Sec.

Yes! like last year, I received a flower!

I'm so glad to be at both sides of the fun.

Nobel Laureat Internet-Conference/ Lecture

Tonight, attended a Nobel Laureate internet-conference / lecture in NIE. Nobel Laureate Russell Hulse discovered Binary Pulsar. (Pulsar = pulsating star). First time attended an internet conference, really interesting. But tiring of course, a morning lecture in Dallas, Texas, US ... is night time is Singapore.

A few pics ...
Most of us know nuts about Pulsar, so there was a pre-lecture lecture about stars - the White Dwarfs, Red Giants, Neutron Stars and Black Holes ... is like a revision of my cosmology module. an elegant diagram summarizing all these is the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram.

Can you spot our Sun in the diagram (it is one of those at the Main Sequence - the diagonal top left to bottom right line) ?

Bad News and Good News -
Bad News: One day our Sun is going to exhaust its fuel and collapse into one of those stars like White Dwarf, Red Giants or some Neutron Stars depending on its mass.

Good News: That's another about 5 billion years . By the way ,the Age of the Sun is 4.6 billion years )

Leisure Kayaking trip

Went to a simple leisure kayaking trip from Pasir Ris to Ubin. Lunch at the jetty and back - Simple and nice, yet rejuvenating.

A scene of Pasir Ris Park

Before setting off...
Passby a Kelong

A view of one of many 'restaurants' in Ubin, from the sea.
