Alan Tam's Concert

I'm still not sure how I actually go to Alan Tam's concert?!?! My cantonese is less than half past six, hardly know any of his songs ... but you know what - I actually enjoy the performance.

It's more of a family thingy, quality time with my cousins whom I usually meet once or twice a year. Need such events and common-things-to-do to keep family members from drifting away. If you find yourself not knowing where your cousins (whom you spent most of your childhood with) work, what they like to do, even the full names of your nephews and niences ... It's a signal to take proactive actions.

At age fifty +, Alan Tam still has his huge share of fans; I am pleasantly surprised.

Here are two snippets of the concert:

Global Positioning System (GPS)

GPS is quite common nowadays. It can be found in cars , taxis and in handheld. Recently, on a kayaking trip into the Ubin Mangrove ( see previous posting), one of us brought a handheld GPS; it showed the route we travelled into the mangrove! no need to be afraid of getting lost - cool.

Depending on devices, the accuracy can go up to 10m. Although for military use, with super duper computers, accuracy up to mm is possible. Imagine locating a mm spot anywhere on Earth!!!

Beside civilian uses, it is also used in military, for example to cruise missiles and precision-guided munitions.
For more applications of GPS:

Do you know?
  1. GPS is owned by the United States and is allowed for public use ( in 1996 during Bill Clinton's presidency) .
  2. It works by 24 satellites orbitting round the earth.
  3. You need to communicate to at least 4 satellites to 'log on' your position.
  4. To compute such precise timing in such a big distance, GPS needs Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.( to account for the gravitational redshift)
  5. And US can choose to shut the system down ... and there goes our taxi booking ...
  6. A few other countries are trying come out with their own Global Navigation Satellites System. They are
    • Beidou by China
    • Galileo by EU
    • Glonass by Russis
    • Indian Regionaly Navigational Satellite System by India (regional)

Exam's Over!!!

Have not posted for some time - have been studying for exams. Have not taken exam in 5 years, a bit raw.

Also, have not been to the NIE library to study for ... anyway, pop by to do a bit of last minute revision before the written paper.

Overlooking the glass window is the 'rainforest'. Quite a nice place to study, except for the chit chatting discussion going on uurrgg ... so irritating.

Before Exam ...

Have not be posting for a while... Studying for exams (which is in 2 weeks time)...Took a break to practice kayaking skills at Kallang. After that, shop at Kino and bought The Economist Style Guide. I came across this in a BBC programme.

For a sneak preview, go to http://www.economist.com/research/styleguide/

Have been writing tonnes of essays for assignments; another one coming. Also, have been reading lots of Preliminary Ideas of students' Project Work (500 words each). This book comes in handy.
